‘Yantra’ Cloth from Thailand
Handwritten on the orange cotton, possibly from a monk’s costume, this very unusual, large yantra cloth is a multi-layered design comprising letters and symbols in Thai and also Khom, the sacred language based on Khmer, from Cambodia. Graphically it is very dynamic with the text on both sides visible together. The text includes a mantra to chant daily for good fortune and commerce.
It is the work of a master in Phitsanolok, in central Thailand. We’ve never seen anything quite like it and find it fascinating in its uniqueness and boldness. Yantra cloths are often made specifically for an individual and/or an occasion by spirit masters, and occasionally by someone in the monkhood.
This is a contemporary piece and shows the ongoing use and importance of these textiles in local culture. Condition is good, with a stain on the back but not the front.
