Zhuang Baby Carrier Panel
From Guangxi Province, this beautiful old Zhuang baby carrier panel is covered in mellow silk embroidery on an indigo cotton background. A pattern of linear bands of stylized flowers alternate with bands of diamonds to form a lush surface. A vertical band down the center has cruciform motifs with small diamonds and is finely embroidered in a different technique.
This unusually-shaped panel has been detached from side ties and a lower panel of indigo cotton. It is probably from the early 20th century and is in very good condition. See ‘Baby Carriers’ by the National Museum of Prehistory, #077 for a similar example.
