Indonesian ‘Keris’ Knife Handle
Old and finely carved of wood, this keris handle is an abstracted figure covered in beautifully detailed floral motifs layered over a pattern of dotted lines. Made of wood and with a nice patina, it probably came from Java. It could represent a very stylized form of Garuda, the mythical figure with a bird head and human body, but we cannot be sure.
We have always considered the best of these to be miniature sculptures and this one certainly qualifies. The age is probably early to mid-20th century. (Stand not included)
