Zhuang Baby Carrier Panel
This beautiful baby carrier panel from the Zhuang in Guangxi Province is covered in rich, thick silk embroidery in several shades of amazing copper brown color. The background is a very harmonious grey plainweave cotton. A small three-colored panel of linear strips in cotton and silk provides a decorative accent at the point where a lower, detachable panel for supporting the baby was attached. Knotted ‘buttons’ indicate where the carrier had detachable ties on the sides as well.
Condition is quite good, with only a bit of wear at the lower center edge. Probably mid-20th century, as indicated by it being embroidered and not woven. See #075 and #076 in ‘Baby Carriers’, from the National Museum of Prehistory in Taiwan.
Size: 29 ” x 14.5″ / 74cm x 37cm
